She had asked for it that way. Not because she disliked being photographed, but because she had paid for a photographer and did not want the moment shared out among a dozen phones. Her view was simple — if this is happening once, let it happen properly.
I think she was right. A room with three people in it behaves differently from a room with ten. Nobody is waiting on you. Nobody is angling for their own version of the shot.
This comes up more than people expect. Guests and suppliers mean no harm — they lift a phone because they are enjoying themselves.
But the moment gets diluted. Attention splits. The bride ends up looking at four lenses instead of none, and the frame you were about to make turns into everyone's frame at once.
A short window with the door shut fixes it. Ten minutes is enough. Her mum was there the whole time, which is the part she wanted anyway.
Bounced flash, not natural light alone. On-camera, angled off the ceiling and the wall behind me so it comes back soft and wraps round her face.
Direct flash is what you see far too often in getting-ready photos. Hard shadow on the wall, shine on the forehead, the skin drained flat. Point the light at the room first and the room does the work.
Bounced properly, the lace holds its detail, the veil keeps its texture, and the room stays visible behind her — the mirror, the painting, the bay windows.
If you are choosing between photographers, ask how they handle flash indoors. It sounds technical. It is really a question about whether your getting-ready photos are ones you keep.

Blairquhan Castle gives you an entrance like no other for a shot like this. The Regency stonework and that arched doorway make a natural stage, and lining the guests down both sides in their kilts and hats turned the whole thing into a corridor of celebration.
I shot this in black and white on purpose. Strip out the colour and you're left with what actually matters — the movement of the confetti, the laughter, the reach of an arm mid-throw, the joy on everyone's faces. It's a documentary frame: I wasn't directing this, I was just in the right spot, ready, when it happened.
Moments like this are why I love what I do. You can't pose a confetti throw. You feel the energy build, you anticipate it, and you catch the split second where everything lands.

The sign says it all. Daddy, it's time to give Mummy our last name.
Her daughter carried it in, and the bride looked down rather than at me. That is the whole picture. I could have called her name and got eye contact, but the better frame was the one already happening.
This is the bridal suite at Blairquhan Castle, minutes before the walk downstairs. Soft window light from the left, four-poster behind, the bridesmaid waiting off to the side. No flash. Rooms in a house like this hold enough light near the windows if you position people properly and then leave them alone.
The autumn bouquet is doing a lot of work — deep reds and burnt orange against all that white lace, with the trailing amaranthus breaking up the line of the dress. Colour stays on this one for that reason alone.
It turned out to be one of the bride's favourites from the day. That happens more often with the quiet frames than the big set pieces. Nobody is performing. Everyone is just waiting, and the good ones arrive on their own.

With a few quiet minutes still available in the room, we had the space to slow down, breathe, and create something genuinely beautiful. Her dress is still moving. His hand is up, hers is up, and the whole room is watching.
The chandelier is the reason this frame works. Shot low and wide, it sits directly above them and pulls the eye down through the crystal to the two of them on the floor. Any tighter and you lose it. Any higher and the room stops feeling like a room.
Blairquhan Castle gives you a proper ballroom — damask walls, portraits, cornicing, and that one light hanging in the middle of it. It is a rare thing in Ayrshire. Most reception spaces need help. This one just needs a photographer who steps back far enough.

Fiona and her husband got married here on a summer's day, and from the moment I arrived, I knew it was going to be one of those weddings I'd remember for a long time.
This was my first time shooting at Blairquhan Castle — and I'll tell you now, it did not disappoint.
I'll start with the two people at the centre of it, because they were the reason the day flowed the way it did. Fiona and her husband were just a genuinely lovely couple to work with — warm, relaxed, up for anything, and completely at ease with each other. Meeting their family was a pleasure too. You can always feel it when a wedding is full of people who actually like being around each other, and this one had that in spades.
When a couple trusts you and lets you get on with it, the pictures look after themselves. Fiona said something afterwards that meant a lot to me:

Fiona and her husband weren't stiff or awkward on the day, but that's not luck — that's me quietly guiding, giving a bit of direction, and making sure it never *feels* like posing. Blairquhan Castle sits in a huge private estate in Ayrshire, and it's one of the most beautiful venues in this part of Scotland. The Regency architecture, the grand hall, the sweeping grounds, the loch — it gives you an enormous range to work with in a single location. You're never scrambling from one spot to another. Everything you need for a full day of storytelling is right there.
For the photography, that matters more than people realise. Grand interiors for the getting-ready shots and the ceremony. Rich, moody rooms for portraits. Then the grounds and the water outside for those big, romantic couple shots when the light softens in the evening. One venue, a whole day's worth of completely different frames.
The ceremony itself was indoors, in the castle, and the light did exactly what I hoped it would.
I shoot in a documentary style — I watch, I wait, and I capture what's actually happening rather than staging it. That's how you end up with the real stuff: the mother-of-the-bride moment before the veil goes on, the bridesmaids together before the ceremony, the quiet reflection shots, the roar of the guests throwing confetti, the first dance where the groom lifts Fiona off her feet.
The story of the day, start to finish, was just so pleasant to be part of. That's a word I keep coming back to — *pleasant*. No stress, no chaos, just a lovely wedding full of people enjoying themselves, and me in the background catching all of it.
I do set time aside for portraits, of course, but even those are relaxed and guided rather than formal. The goal is always the same: images that feel like *you*, not images that look like everyone else's wedding.
