Some of the best photographs of a wedding day aren’t posed at all. This one was made just after the ceremony, in the gardens at Pollok House — the bride and her mother both fanning their faces, trying and failing to hold back the tears, while the bride’s father stands behind them taking the whole thing in. Nobody was looking at me. Nobody was performing. It’s exactly the kind of real, unguarded emotion I’m always watching for.
I photograph Scotland weddings documentary-style, working quietly in the background so moments like this can happen on their own. When the people you love are overwhelmed with happiness, the last thing you want is a photographer pulling everyone into a stiff pose. You want someone there to catch it as it is.
Pollok House sits within Pollok Country Park, the green heart of Glasgow’s Southside — a grand Georgian house wrapped in gardens and woodland. For a bride and family who’d travelled from America, it made an unforgettable Scottish backdrop.
