Edinburgh Castle Wedding Photographer | Bride & Groom

There's something about Edinburgh Castle that makes a wedding feel both grand and deeply personal at the same time. It sits above the city like it has always been waiting for this exact moment, and when a couple steps out in front of it, the whole backdrop seems to lean in. The ceremony itself took place up at the top of the castle, and afterwards we came down into the grounds to capture these portraits before heading off for the wedding meal — the bride and groom framed against centuries of Scottish stone, with their wedding car catching the soft grey light of an April afternoon.

The bride wears a vintage-style gown with delicate beaded detail and a fingertip veil, holding a bouquet of white and deep red blooms. The groom stands beside her in a tweed three-piece suit, the kind of timeless choice that suits a Scottish wedding perfectly. They lean into one another easily, comfortable, unhurried. That ease is the whole point. People often worry they'll freeze up in front of a camera, but the right direction makes the moment feel like it's simply happening — and the photographs carry that warmth long after the day is over.

Edinburgh Castle is one of Scotland's most striking wedding settings, and it photographs beautifully in almost any weather. A bright sky lifts the sandstone to a warm gold; a soft overcast day, like this one, wraps everything in gentle, even light that flatters skin and fabric alike. The grounds give wide, open space for portraits, while the surrounding Old Town offers cobbled closes, dramatic stairways, and quiet corners for something more intimate. A wedding here is never short of a backdrop.

Photographing across Edinburgh and the wider Central Belt means working with couples who want their day to feel genuinely theirs — whether that's a small, meaningful ceremony or a full celebration with family travelling from near and far. A documentary, editorial approach keeps the focus on real moments: the glance, the laugh, the steadying hand. Posed portraits still have their place, and they're crafted with care, but they're guided so gently that they never feel stiff or staged.

This particular wedding will always be a special one to me. It was my mum's wedding, back in April 2024, and being there to photograph her day in front of a setting as beautiful as Edinburgh Castle is something I'll carry with me always. After the portraits we went for a meal, then on to the pub afterwards — a relaxed, happy day full of the kind of moments you never want to forget. She passed away ten months later, and these images mean more than any words can really hold. It's a reminder of exactly why this work matters — that photographs outlast everything else, and that one frame can keep a person, a feeling, and a day alive for the people who loved them most.

If you're planning a wedding at Edinburgh Castle, or anywhere across Edinburgh, the Central Belt, or Scotland more widely, I'd love to hear about your day. Every couple, every venue, and every story is different, and the photographs should reflect that. Wherever you're getting married, the aim is always the same: honest, beautiful images that still feel like you years from now.
