Bride Playing Trumpet at Pollok House Wedding

In more than a few hundred weddings, I'd never photographed anything like this. Megan — still in her wedding dress — picked up a trumpet and played in front of everyone at Pollok House, joining in as Patrick's family performed the theme from Star Wars as their own live orchestra. She'd learned to play especially for the day. Nobody outside the plan saw it coming, and the room absolutely erupted.

Moments like this are why I photograph weddings documentary-style. You cannot pose a surprise. You can only be in the right position, with the right settings, paying attention when it matters — because a moment this good happens once and never again. Look at her concentration: an American bride, weeks of secret practice, delivering her big moment in front of two families from two continents. That's not a wedding photo. That's a family legend, caught for good.

My advice to every couple planning their day: bring your personalities into it. The weddings that produce the most treasured photographs are the ones where couples do things their way — a surprise performance, a family tradition, a moment that could only belong to you. Whatever yours is, I'll be watching for it. Planning a wedding at Pollok House or anywhere in Glasgow? Get in touch — I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up.
