Knife in, both laughing, fairy lights glowing along the marquee behind them. The evening cake cutting has its own atmosphere — softer light, drinks in hands, the formality of the day long since dissolved. I photograph the cake beforehand as a still life, then the cutting as the happy scrum it always becomes. My one piece of direction is always the same: cut slowly and look at each other, not the cake. It buys me three good frames instead of one rushed one. Their cake had travelled through a whole day of Star Wars orchestras and trumpet solos to reach this moment. It earned its ceremony.
