Rain on the day is never the disaster couples fear it'll be — sometimes it hands you your best photograph. This couple wanted portraits out in Partick in Glasgow's West End, and rather than hide from the weather we leaned into it, a clear umbrella and those beautiful sandstone tenements doing all the work.
I used a touch of off-camera flash here to lift the couple off the wet street and make them pop against the grey, while keeping the mood of the day honest. The kilt, the dress, the rain-slicked road — it's unmistakably Glasgow.
Being ready to make the most of whatever a day throws at you is a big part of what I do; a fresh eye and a bit of nerve turns rain into something memorable. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and the West End streets around it gave us a backdrop like no other.
