It's easy to walk past the guest book on a wedding day — everyone's focused on the ceremony, the speeches, the first dance. But this little corner is one of my favourite things to photograph. A leather-bound book, a couple of wooden Scrabble tiles spelling out "GUEST BOOK," a pen laid out ready, and candlelight doing all the work in terms of mood. It's a quiet detail, but it's the one guests will actually write in — the messages, the well wishes, the in-jokes only they'll understand. That's a keepsake in itself.
This was shot at Cottiers in Glasgow's West End, a genuinely special wedding venue and one of my favourites to work in. It's a converted Victorian church — built in 1865 as Dowanhill Parish Church — with the stained glass, stonework and atmosphere still fully intact. Candlelight against that kind of backdrop gives everything a warm, golden tone that's hard to recreate anywhere else.
For a detail shot like this, I let the candle do the lighting rather than adding anything artificial. Getting in close, keeping the depth of field shallow, and letting the light fall off naturally into the background is what gives it that soft, intimate feel — the same warmth you'd want the whole day to carry, just distilled into a single small moment.
Detail shots like this matter more than people often expect. They're not the images that go up on the wall, usually, but they're often the ones that bring a couple straight back to how the day actually felt — the smell of candle wax, the low chatter of the room, all the people who came to be there for them. That's really the whole point of documentary-style wedding photography: catching the things that would otherwise just be forgotten.
Cottiers is a venue I'd recommend to anyone looking for something with real character in Glasgow — architecturally stunning, full of atmosphere, and endlessly photogenic. As a wedding photographer working across Glasgow and Scotland, days here are always a pleasure.
